Dr. Ruth Jacoby

“Dr. Ruth” is the founding principal of one of the first charter schools in Broward County, Florida. There are now five branches serving children in pre-kindergarten through eleventh grade with its first senior high graduating class in 2006. She has more than thirty years of experience as an administrator and educator in traditional public, private and charter schools. Under her leadership, Somerset Charter School became one of the first charter schools to receive SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) accreditation.

Dr. Ruth received her Ed.D. degree in Child and Youth Studies for Children from Birth through Eighteen Years from Nova Southeastern University, and her Masters of Science in Special Needs and Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Brooklyn College.

During the past years, Dr. Ruth has been an adjunct professor at various colleges and universities throughout South Florida and a guest lecturer at many local and national conferences. Her focus is always on enlightening future and present educators to consider the next generation and to empower school staff members and parents to believe that “all children can learn and achieve.”

Dr. Ruth has become actively involved in educating other charter school personnel in how to develop standards-based curriculum and assessments, as well as enriching their communication skills. Her school was one of the founding partners of the Tri-County Charter School Partnership, which implemented three South Florida Annenberg Grants in student assessment and school accountability and two Florida Dissemination Grants. At this juncture, she has been recognized as a leader and designer of state-wide conferences. In addition, Dr. Ruth also serves on the governing boards for several charter schools throughout the nation, and is an active member of the Florida Consortium of Charter Schools.
