“Teachers will love these tips and strategies they can use immediately with students, administrators, teachers and parents. The authors provide worksheets, assessments, and sample dialogue so you have everything you need to communicate effectively”

Sam Horn,
author of Tongue Fu, and Take the Bully By The Horns

Dear Friend and Colleague,

Put yourself in this picture.

It’s 2:55 p.m. and you are rushing to make the faculty meeting running toward the auditorium you collide with Mr. Streight, Jimmy’s dad. He glares at you and says, “Jimmy got an F in Science and it’s your entire fault.” You are at a loss he has totally taken you by surprise.

You think back to the first week of school. Jimmy has been missing assignments since then. This has to be the 50th time that Mr. Streight comes to his defense. How many times have you met, six, maybe seven? School has only been in session for twelve weeks.

But there is more . . .

Just yesterday Jimmy was caught stealing.

You open your mouth to speak and Mr. Streight cuts you off. Your patience is beginning to wane. But being the ultimate professional you try not to get defensive. He starts getting loud. You begin to talk and stumble through every single word. You are getting frustrated and your stress level is at its all time high.

Suddenly, you are at a loss for words.Your head begins to pound, and you can feel your blood pressure rising. Your impromptu meeting was far from being a success.

How you wished you had someone there to help you and guide you.

Many of us are uncomfortable when having to talk to parents, especially about sensitive issues. Knowing how to communicate well is the mark of the true teaching professional and can transform a merely competent teacher into a great one.

Let’s face it . . . Everyone needs to communicate. But effective communication is more than just talking – it encompasses pursuing a deeper understanding, an open sharing of ideas, the willingness to brainstorm without criticizing, and the effective dissemination of information.

Did you know that we spend 80% of our waking day communicating?

Tact and skill in handling people are enviable traits in any profession, but for the successful teacher they are essential.

How well do you communicate with parents?

Take the following quiz:

1. Are you uncomfortable speaking with parents?
2. Are you in need of assistance at conference time?
3. Are you looking for easy to use worksheets and sample letters to guide you?
4. Are you in need of answers on how to handle common everyday situations?
